This module aims to build on prior modules and enhance the students capabilities for providing evidence based clinical medicine for the critically ill casualty found in remote, austere and resource poor environments.
Competences
at the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
1. The delegate will learn to manage the critically ill casualty independently that will require problem-solving techniques where there are many factors, some of which interact and lead to unpredictable outcomes.
2. The delegate will show creativity in managing the critically ill casualty, will manage people and review performance of self and others; trains others to assist him during the care of the critically ill casualty in remote and austere environments.
3. The delegate will express a comprehensive internalised personal world view by utilising the Gibbs reflective model for reflecting on past performance.
4. The delegate will learn skills to undertake further emergency medical studies with a degree of autonomy.
Knowledge
at the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:
1. The delegate will build on their foundational knowledge of the critically ill casualty and develop advanced concepts in medical treatment in the intensive care unit found in remote and austere environments.
2. The delegate will develop strategic and creative responses in researching solutions to dealing with the critically ill casualty using well defined concrete and abstract problems.
3. The delegate will learn to makes clinical judgements based on knowledge of relevant social and ethical issues surrounding the care of the critically ill patient including the treatments for medical emergencies found in resource poor environments.
Skills
at the end of the module/unit the learner will have mastered the following skills:
Applying knowledge and understanding
The delegate will be able to:
1. Demonstrate and interpret comprehensive knowledge of causes and pathophysiology into the management of critically ill casualty in a resource poor environment.
2. Identify and manage comprehensive knowledge of the causes and pathophysiology into these acute and critical illnesses.
3. Interpret and apply critical care assessment findings found in the Intensive Care Unit located in resource poor environments.
Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities
The delegate will be able to:
1. Demonstration the assessment and treatment of the critical patient.
2. Demonstrate the use and assessment of blood gas analysis.
3. Perform advanced medical procedures required by the critical care paramedic.
4. Discuss the shocked state and the haemodynamically unstable casualty.
5. Understand the principles of the practice of critical care.
6. Demonstrate the use of RSI procedures for the failed airway.
7. Demonstrate the skills required to treat a burns casualty.
8. Discuss the assessment and treatment modalities for the critically ill casualty found in remote and austere environments with a delayed evacuation.
